I think through, design and build every piece, working directly in wood, stone and metal, and integrating the electronics and software that turn ideas into objects that find their place in the real world. The first collection, 4 Arcs, is a lamp in marble and hardwood, finished by hand and lit by a custom electronics board powered over USB-C. Alongside it, Tentativa is the studio’s generative system for one-off wall pieces, each of them engineered for the wall it is going to live on. Because clarity is lost long before you reach silence. Restraint is not absence. It is the result of a choice. ## 4 Arcs 4 Arcs begins with the arch. It is one of the few forms in architecture that has never needed justifying, a form that has passed through time without losing its meaning. To me, it is close to eternal. And in a way, the arch was there from the start. It hides in my own name: I noticed that both the M and the B of the wordmark carry arches in their structure. None of it was intentional, but that observation opened the way to the idea for the lamp. I started playing with the form, seeing how it could be turned, repeated and placed in space. At some point I rotated each arch through ninety degrees and found that, out of a simple graphic mark, a structure was beginning to appear. That is where the lamp was born. That form, drawn from the arch, became the studio’s signature. 4 Arcs exists in two heights, 400 and 550 millimetres, on the same 150 mm square footprint and with the same 100 mm base. The 400 came first, built around a simple ratio: the marble base is exactly a quarter of the total height, and the wooden structure the other three quarters. The 550 came later. The 400 needed a taller partner to make a pair, but the second height could not simply be a scaled-up version of the first. I kept the same footprint and the same base, and changed the proportion of marble to wood, so that the two heights complete each other rather than repeat each other. The smaller weighs 5 kilograms, the larger 6. Each height exists in two material combinations. The dark variant is made of Nero Marquina marble and walnut; the light one, of Carrara marble and linden. The contrast is, in fact, the core of the object: warm against cold. A material cut out of the ground already solid, next to one that grew. The light is not a working light. It is ambient. The usual classification would file it under decorative lighting; I see it differently, as a sculpture that switches on. It runs on a custom electronics board with integrated LEDs at 3000K, drawing 5 W over USB-C. There is no bulb socket and no proprietary connector. It runs from the cable you already own, anywhere in the world, and it does not go obsolete when a fitting standard moves on. The current variants are serialized but not limited. Every piece carries its own number, and the run stays open. Special editions will follow, beginning with one made of purpleheart, a wood with deep natural tones of violet and purple whose grain takes on a presence of its own in the finished surface. Some editions will be a fixed number of pieces; others, a fixed number per batch, with the number of batches not yet set. Tentativa is where the approach to product design itself is put to the test. It is not a hypothesis and not a conceptual exercise: it can be commissioned. The name is also the argument. A tentativa is an attempt. In Romanian and in Italian, the word carries the same idea. You arrange the pieces as well as you can and, even then, you cannot know exactly what will come out. And when the result is beautiful, its beauty does not come from an outcome that was fully controlled. That has been my own life as well. Tentativa turns that into an object. It is about the part of life most of us would rather deny: that, in the end, we are not in control. In concrete terms, each piece is a welded metal frame carrying stone, engineered to the dimensions of the wall it will end up on. Every piece is unique and made to order through the configurator. The client chooses the word and the dimensions, and so becomes part of the making of their own piece. And yet, once it starts taking shape, neither of us controls it fully any more. The word is turned into a hash, and that hash feeds a generator which sets how many bars there will be, how large they will be and where they will sit. Nothing is random. And yet the result stays impossible to anticipate: the composition only exists once the word has been computed all the way through. You set the starting points, the word and the dimensions. From there, the generator follows its own rules, and the final form takes shape without either of us being able to decide exactly what it will look like. The studio keeps a seed vault: every word ever used is recorded and permanently locked. Once consumed, a word can never generate a second piece. The code simply refuses to produce one. Uniqueness is not a promise. It is enforced by the system. Every coordinate is quantised to a 5 mm grid, and the cavities the geometry leaves are filled with stone. The frame is welded and finished by hand. Tentativa is commissioned, not stocked. Each piece is engineered for a single wall, so there is no inventory. Three pieces have been physically made so far. In this kit, the collection is shown through renders of resolved designs, each labelled as a render. Photographs of the real pieces will be added as new commissions are made. ## How the work is made Wood, stone and metal are cut, milled and finished here in Bucharest. Some pieces start from a drawing, others are generated by an algorithm; on every one of them, the machines do the part that demands precision, and the hands do the rest. Form is not chosen for looks alone. It starts from the material and from what the material allows. For 4 Arcs, the wood arrives at the studio as dried planks, three to four metres long, in different thicknesses depending on the species. Each plank is jointed and planed until the surface is perfectly flat, then several planks are glued up to form the 150 mm square column. At this section, solid timber would not have offered the stability needed, and at the size and in the volumes 4 Arcs requires there is no steady supply of planks in every species. I looked for one. So the material is built in the studio: the planks are worked and glued up in layers until they form columns at the exact dimensions of the piece. The glued block is then jointed and planed again, left slightly oversize and sent to the CNC, where each face is carved in turn. From there, the piece comes back to the studio for hand sanding and finishing, before assembly and packing. The finish is linseed oil, with no film over it, so the grain of the wood stays open. Over time, the surface can be maintained and refreshed, without ever needing to be replaced. The marble is the only part of the process done outside the studio. The panels that form the box are cut on a waterjet, which is what gives the mitres their precise forty-five degrees. The bonding and polishing are done by a master stonemason here in Bucharest: marble dust is a serious health hazard and I do not have the extraction to work with it safely, so that work goes to someone who does. The piece then comes back to the studio for final assembly. Everything else, the design, the engineering and the electronics included, is done here. To me, the drawing is not separate from what makes it possible: the computation behind it, the code, the tools and, in the end, the object. They are all part of the same work, even if in the finished piece most of it can no longer be seen. The tooling, the precision and the code are made to disappear into the object. What should remain is the object, and the sense that someone decided every millimetre of it on purpose. ## How it started It started with offcuts. As a kid, I built things out of whatever the garden gave me, scrap wood and nails, and decided those pieces were going to be an object and nothing else. In time, what had begun as a hobby became something more. My mother saw how seriously I was taking it and built me a small workshop in the garden, a space of my own where I could work without improvising every time. It was simple and close to rudimentary, with a few basic woodworking tools, but to me it meant that what I was doing had started to be seen as more than play. All through school, what I was doing had not yet found a name, or a clear place in the categories available to me. Doing IGCSE and then the International Baccalaureate, I was making products while the rest of the class painted and drew. My art teachers were trained in fine art and, naturally, looked at my work through that lens. It was not obvious where it fitted in their subject. And, in a certain sense, it did not fit. What I discovered, though, was that the curriculum was broad enough to allow another way of working. I did not have to change what I was doing to suit the subject; I had to find the way my work could exist inside it. So I did. The examiners marked the depth of the work, not the category it was supposed to sit in, and I got the top grade in both exams. The name for what I was doing arrived by accident. A family friend mentioned, at some point, that he had studied product design and showed me what he had made. That was enough for me. The thing I had been doing since the garden was, in fact, a profession. It had a school behind it, a history and a literature. I found Istituto Marangoni in Milan, submitted my application, and never considered anything else. I finished school in 2021 and graduated from Marangoni cum laude in 2024, teaching myself everything the curriculum did not cover: machining, electronics, fabrication, and the software today’s studio runs on. ## The first object The first object was a lamp, made during the IGCSE exam: an apple built from slices of plexiglass turned around a central hub. The work started from two very different references. The first was Damien Hirst’s Natural History series, with its animals bisected and suspended in formaldehyde. The second was time-slice photography, where the same scene is photographed from the same point at successive intervals, and the final image is built from one strip taken out of each exposure. I took something from each and turned them into a single image. I set the slices so that the bulb at the centre of the apple stayed visible through at least two of them. A single light source appears several times over, creating the impression that there are more. The apple was an early work, made at a time when I was still finding my language. But the method is the same one I use today: you set a rule, apply it consistently, and accept a result you cannot control all the way. ## Milan Marangoni gave me two things I would not have the studio without: a conceptual structure, and the ability to take an idea from nothing to something that can be formally presented, end to end. What I felt was missing was the making. The course ran on strict briefs, which is natural in a process of learning, and prototyping technologies, 3D printing included, were a natural part of how work was done. For me, though, what stayed important was the direct closeness to material and object: to build it, to touch it, and to understand through the work what, on paper, I had only designed. That is where I understood that, for me, designing and making are not two entirely separate stages. The drawing is the beginning, and the finished object is where all the decisions before it become real. An object you have never had in your hands is still a drawing. The school’s lab was not always suited to the projects I wanted to take all the way. When I started working with carbon fibre, it became clear that I needed another space and other working conditions. So I carried on in my own apartment, with a printer and a few hand tools. I did what I could with what was at hand and, at the same time, learned where the possibilities of a space like that end. That experience clarified something I would keep for later: I wanted to understand a project from the first sketch to the finished object. Not just to imagine it, but to go through material, construction, prototyping, mistakes and adjustments until it came to exist. Around me I saw many ways of entering design, but I was looking for something closer to the whole process. I wanted to learn by making, to understand why an object works the way it works, and to be able to carry as much of the road to the result as possible myself. That is what I studied for. ## The dissertation What I understood then still guides the way I work today: everything that happens behind an object has to earn its place in what ends up, finally, in front of you. Technology can be spectacular, but its spectacle is not the point. A screen can hold your attention while it is on; when it goes dark, what remains in front of you is a black screen. To me, that is the moment design has to speak for itself. So when the dissertation brief asked for something technological and futuristic, at a time when I was increasingly interested in how such concepts can become real products, I took the brief to the letter. I made a desk built around a paternoster mechanism, a continuous system in which the compartments travel in a vertical loop, rising on one side and descending on the other. Instead of pulling a drawer out, the desk cycles its drawers internally, brings the one you need to the top, and lifts its base flush to the desktop, into a cutout in the surface. The things you need end up looking as though they had been there the whole time. For the futuristic element the brief asked for, I argued the desk should have no buttons at all and should be driven by a brain-computer interface, citing Apple’s patent filings for biosensors in earbuds. Design should be proactive rather than reactive: the object should already exist for the moment the technology catches up. I expected to be told it was interesting and unbuildable, so I built it. Three months, roughly three hundred parts, every one designed from scratch and 3D printed, assembled at full size with stepper motors, drivers, control electronics and the code to run them. It worked, at the degree hearing, in front of the people who were going to tell me it could not be done. The title was Integrating Brain-Computer Interfaces with Adaptive and Responsive Environments, and it is what the cum laude was for. ## Why I came home What settled it was a meeting. Through the university, I came to present work directly to one of the established Italian furniture houses, which was looking for solutions for small apartments: furniture that could serve several functions without taking up more space. For them, I designed and prototyped a coffee table that could change its height, turning from a low table into a surface suited to another use. The mechanism was very simple: the legs rotated to change the height, and the same solution could be adapted to tables of different sizes without new tooling or mechanisms. Only the connecting beams changed. They liked it. They said they would prototype it internally and come back with an answer. It did not happen, and that experience stayed with me above all as a lesson in how different a project can look from inside a studio versus the moment it reaches the real world. There was nothing personal in it: I was one of many designers they were meeting and evaluating. But for me it was the first occasion to see how much road there is between a good idea, a prototype, and a product that actually comes to exist. Even with direct access to the company, entering the Italian market would have been a long process, with its own rhythm and its own stages. That is when I began to understand how many things have to line up for an object to go from prototype to product. So I came home. Romania was a deliberate bet. In a single decade, interior design here had gone from a field that barely existed to a real industry, while product design had not had the same evolution. Most objects came from abroad, were made industrially, or existed as personal projects, with no ecosystem around them. To me, that distance was precisely the opportunity. If there was room between the imported object and the one made out of passion, there was also room for product design conceived, engineered and made here, at a level that can stand beside anything brought in. That is what the studio is for. I spent the first year designing for other companies. My own products began coming out in 2025. Building a studio here, with real production capability, closes a circle that began long before there was a studio. My first workshop was the one my mother built in the garden. This is, in essence, the same thing: a place where ideas can be taken all the way.
